What bag will Meghan Markle carry next?
Where Meghan Markle leads in the style stakes, thousands follow. The American, who will marry Prince Harry in May, caused the Strathberry bag she carried on her first royal engagement to sell out in minutes and yesterday the same happened with this Demellier London Mini Venice bag after she carried it in Cardiff.
Ms Markle seems to have taken a step away from the traditional Royal style of carrying a clutch bag (often seen carried by the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge – to avoid shaking hands with people with whom it might be awkward) instead favouring small bags with a top handle.
Both Strathberry and DeMellier are British brands and that got me thinking. Which brand is Megan likely to carry next? As Ms Markle is to marry into the royal family later this year I think her choices will still be quite conservative but with a classic twist. I’ve rounded up some of the best British bags which I think might get her (soon to be) royal stylish stamp of approval.
A classic British brand renowned for its quality, the clean lines on this bag – with its removeable strap, something that is key for Meghan – makes it a stylish modern yet traditional choice.
Mulberry is one of the most famous British designers and bag brands. The Mini Seaton from their SS18 collection ticks the boxes of being compact, sleek and traditional.
And trivia fans, Ms Markle lived in an area of Toronto called Seaton Village while she was filming US legal drama Suits, so there is a nice link to her life before Harry.
Lost Property of London – Mini Elwin Rucksack (with straps removed)
A fresh modern shape but still with the size and top-handle style favoured by Ms Markle, this is for a more relaxed occasion maybe but I could definitely see this working with her personal style.
Maybe a slightly more daring pick in bright red and with Lulu Guinness’ trademark lip motif on the zip pulls, but again with a removeable strap this bag will look stylish carried by its top handle and is a versatile choice as it would suit smart but also casual looks.
Handmade in England, Mimi Berry’s designs are simple but will stand the test of time
A cute, practical bag with contrasting top handle – and, of course, an optional strap – this small bag is definitely perfectly formed and I think it ticks all the boxes.
Undoubtedly the world’s fascination with Ms Markle will increase as her wedding day approaches – but my eyes will be on her next bag, which will undoubtedly be crowned the newest ‘must have’ item.
