What do you think of when I say the words “American Gigolo”? Richard Gere as a male escort? Blondie’s Call Me from the film’s soundtrack? Or a certain clutch carried by Lauren Hutton’s character Michelle Stratton?

If it’s the latter then you’re in luck. (Apologies Richard Gere fans, there’s no photos of him in a state of undress here).

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Bottega Veneta has launched “The Lauren 1980”, an exact replica of the intrecciato clutch the actor carried in the film in the same red shade.

The stunning bag was originally made as a one-off for the film but it’s been re-released to celebrate the Italian fashion house’s 50th anniversary.

Hutton herself showcased the bag when she walked the FW17 runway for Bottega Veneta at Milan fashion week, carrying the clutch in the same deep red hue as seen in the film.

It’s a timeless bag, but if red’s not your colour then there are others to tickle your pickle, including tan, grey, cobalt blue, twilight pink and aqua, and I’ve also seen a sneaky peek of a beautiful white croc print version which looks set to hit Net-a-Porter soon.

I love the gold and grey colourways the most, they look absolutely stunning and are both classic yet modern and the perfect evening clutch. The bag has proved popular since its reappearance last year thanks to its relaxed elegance – making it work both with a classic trench a la Hutton herself or an evening gown.

They are a big purchase, though, with an eye-watering price tag of £1,620, but they are a thing of beauty.

Are you tempted by this bag? I do think they are very classy but personally I prefer a bag with a strap – even for an evening bag. I’ve never been one for slipping a bag casually under my arm and while I do love this bag, it’s very much a love-it-or-leave-it style I think.
